When we think of brain development, one often thinks of math, science and reading- the fundamentals. However, whether for lack of options, time or awareness, learning a second language is overlooked.
As parents and guardians, we are often looking for ways for our kids to excel. Studies show that bilingual and multilingual students surpass children who only speak one language, especially in reading, vocabulary and math. (Source: West Virginia Department of Education, 2023). A four year study conducted by Jennifer Steele, revealed that by the end of middle school bilingual students were ahead of their peers in reading by a shocking full year. (Source: Kamenetz, 2016).
Learning another language is also a means for setting kids up for future success. When children learn languages at a young age, it allows their brain to switch back and forth between words in different languages allowing them to concentrate better and respond faster to questions. Additionally, kids introduced to a second language at an early age have enhanced, cognitive, creative and multitasking skills. (Source: Wisner, 2024)
Living in the Loudoun County area, we are fortunate to live in a diverse area. Children who understand different languages will be able to communicate better with different people and have a vast understanding of different cultures.
To embrace the culture richness of Loudoun County, L-Lab brings a fun yet stimulating after school languages program for working parents.
